Air India Targets Full International Flight Resumption by October 1 After Safety Pause
Air India is poised for a phased resumption of its international operations, beginning August 1, 2025, with the aim of full resumption by October 1, 2025. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson stated this measured approach ensures thorough verification before service resumes with complete confidence. This follows a 15 per cent reduction in international widebody operations on June 18, part of a "voluntary 'Safety Pause'" initiated to stabilise operations and prioritise safety.
The temporary halt was prompted by the tragic crash of flight AI171 on June 12, 2025. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flying from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming 260 lives. CEO Wilson reiterated Air India’s "unwavering commitment" to safety, stating all aircraft were inspected under Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) supervision with no issues found.
However, a DGCA audit in July reportedly identified 51 safety-related lapses, including inadequate pilot training. The airline has also faced recent flight cancellations due to technical issues. Air India remains committed to strengthening internal processes, maintaining transparency, and aligning with the highest safety standards.
