Bihar Govt Mix Up Woman Declared Dead Found Alive

Patna — In a bizarre twist from Bihar, a woman who was officially declared dead by the government was found very much alive and healthy, exposing a major blunder in the state’s digital records.

The incident occurred in Siwan district, where the name of Meena Devi was listed as "deceased" in official documents under the State Identification Register (SIR) — a system used for Aadhaar and welfare verification. As a result, she was cut off from government schemes, including her pension and ration card benefits.

When Meena Devi tried to get her documents updated, officials told her she was already marked as dead. She had to personally appear before district authorities to "prove" that she is alive. Only after a lot of effort was her status corrected in the system.

The case has raised serious questions about the accuracy of digital record-keeping and the possible impact on lakhs of beneficiaries across Bihar. Officials have promised a review of similar cases.
