Diplomatic Dash PM Modis Maldives visit after UK Trip signals Regional Focus

Prime  Minister Narendra Modi landed in Maldives on Friday, July 25, a day after signing the FTA pact with UK. Maldivian President Mohamad  Muizzu has invited PM as the chief guest to celebrate 60th Independence Day and the 60th anniversary of India and Maldives diplomatic relations. He is on a two day visit in Maldives mainly to strengthen its diplomatic relations. 

PM Modi received a warm welcome from the Maldivian President and both the leaders would discuss regarding various matters to deepen its bond and to foster their bilateral relations. Though Maldives and India relations were strained earlier because of the President Muizzu's "India Out" Campaign. In Muizzu's reign PM Modi's visit is the first ever visit of a state head government as stated by the Foreign secretary Vikram Misri. PM Modi's visit to Maldives is seen as a significant step towards deepening the diplomatic ties and establishing regional cooperation. 

The leader would also discuss about the progress of the Economic and Marine Time partnership that was agreed by the leader during Muizzu's visit in India in 2024. Both the leaders are also expected to discuss on Free Trade Agreement and the launch of India's UPI services in Maldives. PM Modi will inaugurate India-assisted development project and would discuss about enhancing defense cooperation, including combating drug trafficking in Indian ocean. So, this visit would be fruitful for both the nations and is expected to establish good regional cooperation.
