Former J&K Governor Satyapal Malik Dies at 79

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik passed away on Monday at the age of 79. He had been unwell for some time, and the news of his death was confirmed by sources close to his family.

Malik held the post of Governor in multiple states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Goa, and Meghalaya. His tenure in Jammu and Kashmir was particularly notable as he served during the critical period when Article 370 was abrogated and the state was reorganized into two Union Territories in August 2019.

He began his political career in the 1970s and held positions in various political parties over the decades. Malik served as a Member of Parliament in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and also held roles in parties like the Congress, Janata Dal, and BJP.

Even after completing his tenure as Governor, Malik remained in the public eye due to his outspoken views on issues such as the farmers' protests and national security matters. He was known for speaking candidly, including on the Pulwama terror attack and administrative decisions of the central government.

Political leaders from across the spectrum have expressed condolences following his death, recalling his long public service and firm political stand.
