India Marks 26th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas Honours Brave Soldiers

India observed the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, commemorating the nation's victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. The day honours the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who recaptured high-altitude posts from Pakistani intruders in the Kargil sector of Ladakh.

The main event was held at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, where top officials from the Indian Army, along with political leaders and families of martyrs, paid floral tributes to the fallen heroes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended their respects via social media, thanking soldiers for their unmatched courage and patriotism.

The Kargil conflict, which began in May 1999, lasted for nearly two months. Pakistani soldiers and militants had secretly crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and occupied key mountain positions. In response, the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay to drive them out. The war ended on 26th July 1999, with India successfully regaining control of its territory. Over 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives during the operation.

Across the country, schools, colleges, and institutions held special events, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and patriotic speeches to honour the heroes of Kargil.

Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our armed forces and the importance of national security. It inspires every Indian to stand united and respect the armed forces for their service.
