India Says EU and US Showing Double Standards on Russian Trade
India has accused the United States and European Union of adopting a double standard in their approach to trade with Russia. New Delhi claims that while Western nations criticize India for purchasing Russian oil and other goods, they continue to maintain their own economic relations with Moscow.
Government officials argue that Western countries have not been transparent about the scale of their own imports from Russia since the conflict in Ukraine began. India has stressed that its energy purchases are driven by national interest and affordability, and that it has not violated any international law.
The remarks came amid ongoing global tensions over sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Western powers have urged countries to limit their trade with Moscow in order to increase pressure. However, India has repeatedly defended its neutral stance and continued trade ties with Russia, particularly in the energy sector.
Indian authorities highlighted that while India faces criticism for buying discounted Russian oil, several European countries have increased their own imports of Russian goods, especially natural gas and fertilizers. They said such actions undermine the legitimacy of sanctions and reflect an inconsistent approach.
India has called for a fair and balanced dialogue on the issue, pointing out that economic decisions made by sovereign nations should be respected equally.
This development adds to the ongoing geopolitical debate around global trade fairness and the role of sanctions.
