India and Russia Reaffirm Deepening Ties Amid US Tariff Row

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke via phone today, reaffirming their commitment to further deepen the "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" between India and Russia. This significant conversation occurred days after US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, citing India's continued purchases of Russian crude oil.

During the call, President Putin briefed PM Modi on the latest developments concerning Ukraine, to which Modi reiterated India's consistent position advocating for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The leaders also reviewed progress in their bilateral agenda.

PM Modi extended an invitation to President Putin to visit India later this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. This would mark Putin's first visit to New Delhi in four years.

India has consistently defended its oil imports from Russia, characterising them as essential to protect the nation’s economic security and strategic interests. The relationship between India and Russia is described as a "steady and time-tested partnership," with economic and trade relations having already exceeded a $30 billion target and setting a new goal of $50 billion in bilateral investment.
