Khaleda Zia Poised for Political Comeback in Upcoming Bangladesh Elections

Dhaka-In a move that could reshape Bangladesh’s political landscape, former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is set to contest the country’s next general election, signaling a high-stakes return to the political battlefield after years of legal battles and health setbacks.

Sources within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have confirmed that the party is preparing for her nomination, banking on a possible legal or political resolution that would enable her participation despite current restrictions due to corruption convictions. Party insiders say Khaleda Zia’s candidacy is seen as both a symbolic and strategic decision — aimed at uniting the opposition and galvanizing BNP supporters, especially amid growing dissatisfaction with the ruling Awami League.

Zia, 79, has been largely absent from the public stage since 2018, when she was imprisoned on graft charges and later placed under house arrest due to ill health. Her political inactivity has sparked debates over the future of the BNP, which has faced mounting pressure from the government and electoral commission. However, her anticipated return has reignited enthusiasm among party loyalists.

"We believe the people of Bangladesh want to see Begum Zia back in power. She still remains the most trusted figure in our party," said a senior BNP leader, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Legal hurdles remain a significant concern. Under existing law, Khaleda Zia is barred from contesting elections due to her conviction — unless she receives a presidential pardon or a court order reversing her sentence. BNP leaders are reportedly exploring all available legal options, while also lobbying for political negotiations ahead of the polls.

The Awami League, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has yet to issue a formal response, but ruling party officials have previously dismissed suggestions of Zia’s return as “political theatre.” Analysts, however, say her comeback could add serious momentum to opposition efforts, especially amid public unrest over inflation, governance issues, and allegations of shrinking democratic space.
