Monsoon Session Updates as Parliament Rocked by Opposition Ruckus

New Delhi, 31 July 2025
Parliament's Monsoon Session today was largely dominated by widespread disruptions and adjournments across both Houses, with the Opposition maintaining a persistent ruckus and engaging in sloganeering. Amidst the turmoil, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal affirmed India's commitment to safeguarding national interests in light of the US tariff announcement.

Proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha began today, 31 July 2025, but were quickly marred by protests from the Opposition. The Lok Sabha experienced significant ruckus early on and was initially adjourned until 2 pm. The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned until 12 pm. Later in the day, both Houses faced further adjournments, with the Lok Sabha pausing until 4 pm and the Rajya Sabha until 4:30 pm. Ultimately, the Lok Sabha adjourned for the entire day amidst the ongoing Opposition protests.

Key issues contributing to the day's disruptions included the Opposition's continued ruckus over the Bihar SIR exercise. Furthermore, a debate on the Pahalgam terror strike and Operation Sindoor concluded in Parliament on an acrimonious note. The Opposition staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha, protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom they accused of "insulting" the House by not responding to the discussion despite being present in the complex.

In other significant developments, the Lok Sabha granted its approval for extending President's Rule in Manipur by another six months. This matter is scheduled for discussion in the Upper House today.

A notable moment in the Lok Sabha came when Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the issue of US tariffs. Goyal was expected to respond to former President Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff. He stated that India would "take all steps to protect national interests" concerning the US tariff. The Monsoon Session continues to face challenges, with minimal business being conducted due to the persistent Opposition protests.
