Rahul Gandhi Slams EC Over Poll Defeats, Accuses BJP-RSS of Undermining Democracy
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission (EC), calling it a "biased umpire" in the wake of recent electoral defeats. Speaking at a party event on Friday, Gandhi said the democratic playing field in India was being tilted in favour of the ruling party, accusing the BJP-RSS nexus of systematically dismantling the institutional fabric of the country.
“The Election Commission no longer acts as a neutral referee. It has become an instrument in the hands of the ruling party,” Gandhi said, expressing concern over what he called a steady erosion of trust in democratic institutions.
While reflecting on the Congress party’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, Gandhi alleged that election rules were selectively enforced, and opposition campaigns were frequently stifled through administrative and legal pressures. He also pointed to the role of money power and media control, calling them tools used to manipulate the narrative.
“The fight isn’t just against a political party anymore,” he remarked. “It’s against an ideology that wants to silence dissent and rewrite the soul of India. This is no longer a conventional political contest but it’s a struggle to save democracy itself.”
He further accused the BJP and RSS of spreading communal hate and fear to divide voters. “Institutions that once protected the Constitution are now protecting the regime,” he added.
The BJP, in response, dismissed Gandhi’s remarks as “excuses for repeated failures,” saying the Congress needed introspection, not blame games.
