Something Is Wrong SC Critical Statement about IIT Kharagpur

In the quiet corridors of IIT Kharagpur a storm brews silently one that has claimed four young lives in just seven months. The latest tragedy involved a fourth-year mechanical engineering student found lifeless in his hostel room, sending terrors across the nation. While academic excellence is the benchmark of IITs, no one talks about the silent demise of scholarly students by suicide.
Students here are often burdened by immense academic pressure not just from the system, but also from expectations at home. Many are compared to others, judged by ranks and grades, not effort or individuality. Even a slight dip in performance can feel like failure.

What makes it worse is the unspoken pain. Behind bright smiles are the untold tales of mental trauma, isolation, and bullying. Many students silently battle anxiety, depression, or self-doubt. Some face excessive peer pressure, while others are victims of mockery and exclusion. Sadly, empathy is often in short supply both within campus circles and in society at large.Though IIT Kharagpur has a 12 member counseling cell and has now formed a 10 member committee, students help is either too late or too distant.

The Supreme Court is taking notice of this growing crisis, has issued strict directives that all institutes must adopt a mental health policy, run regular career and emotional wellness sessions, and ensure suicide helpline numbers that are visible across campuses.Real change begins when academic institutions, parents, and peers listen without judgment, support without conditions, and make mental health as much a priority as marks.
