TMC feud escalates as Kalyan Banerjee resigns after Mahua Moitra snubs him
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has resigned from his position as the party's chief whip in Lok Sabha, effective August 4, 2025, following a heated public exchange with fellow MP Mahua Moitra. Moitra had controversially referred to Banerjee as a "pig" during an India Today podcast, stating, "You don't wrestle with a pig. Because the pig likes it and you get dirty". She attributed her remarks to what she called "deeply misogynistic, sexually frustrated, depraved men in India".
Banerjee swiftly condemned Moitra's words as "dehumanising" and "unfortunate," arguing they reflected a "deep disregard for basic norms of civil discourse". He accused Moitra of employing "abusive and misogynistic language," asserting that labeling a male colleague "sexually frustrated" constituted "outright abuse" and reinforced a "toxic double standard". Banerjee emphasised that such remarks are indecent and that abuse remains abuse, irrespective of gender.
The four-time MP from Srerampur cited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's comments about a "lack of coordination" among party MPs as the stated reason for his resignation. While he announced his decision on a news channel, sources suggest he might reconsider, with a potential meeting scheduled with Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Separately, Abhishek Banerjee has been appointed as the party's new leader in Lok Sabha, replacing Sudip Bandopadhyay.
