Torrential Downpours Ravage Northern China, Claim Lives and Displace Thousands
Heavy rainfall has unleashed chaos across parts of northern China, resulting in the death of at least two people and forcing thousands to flee their homes. The relentless downpours, which began earlier this week, have triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and transportation disruptions in several provinces.
According to local authorities, the provinces of Hebei and Shanxi have been among the worst affected. In Hebei, swollen rivers and overwhelmed drainage systems inundated residential areas, prompting emergency evacuations. Rescue teams, working around the clock, have relocated over 10,000 people from flood-prone zones to temporary shelters set up in schools and community halls.
“The water rose too fast. We barely had time to grab our belongings,” said Li Fang, a resident of Handan city. “It’s the worst flooding we’ve seen in years.”
In Shanxi, mudslides triggered by the rain claimed two lives and left several others injured. Roads have been washed away in rural areas, cutting off access to some villages and hampering relief efforts. Emergency crews have been deployed to clear debris and restore communication lines.
Meteorological departments have issued continued rain alerts in the northern region, warning of more potential flooding and infrastructure strain. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid traveling to low-lying areas.
