Two goods trains derail in Jharkhand Seraikela Kharsawan causing widespread service disruption
In the early hours of August 9, two freight trains derailed near Chandil station in Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district. The derailment, which affected more than 20 wagons, took place as both trains were passing each other on adjacent tracks, leading to widespread damage and significant railway disruption.
Thankfully, none of the eight crew members aboard the trains were injured. However, the derailment caused severe damage to the tracks, forcing authorities to cancel, reroute, or short-terminate multiple express and passenger services. Impacted trains included the Howrah-Ranchi and Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Expresses, as well as several MEMU and Express services.
Railway officials deployed heavy machinery and mobilized clearance teams to restore operations as quickly as possible. Repairs are being carried out on a war-footing, with an aim to resume partial train services by midnight. A formal investigation panel has also been constituted to determine the cause of the derailment.
Passengers faced major inconvenience and delays, especially those traveling for Rakshabandhan, as many missed family gatherings due to the cancellations.
